Nature Cycle

UX & UI Case Study

01. Overview

Balancing Skincare Shopping with Simplicity

This case study presents NaturCycle,  a skincare shopping app designed to help users discover natural products and nearby stores with ease. My goal was to deliver a smooth, calming experience that makes finding the right skincare simple and enjoyable.

02. Role

Impact

The project resulted in a successful launch for Candidate Labs, and they proceeded to do some amazing things, listed below, and landed some awesome clients like Notion, Deel, Coda, Retool, Airbase, and many other venture-funded startups.

Conducted user interviews, designed the prototype, and tested with target users.

My Contributions

03. Process

Problem

Many skincare companies struggle to engage customers through digital channels because they lack a dedicated mobile app. Without an app, users only access the website, missing opportunities to receive instant notifications about sales or new products. In addition:

  1. No dedicated app – Only a website, which is less effective for driving repeat purchases and sending timely updates.
  2. Overwhelming product range – Customers find it difficult to search and locate specific products.
  3. Poor connectivity on the go – Shoppers who want to check products while outside often face slow or unreliable mobile internet, making browsing inconvenient.

需求

I designed a dedicated skincare shopping app to enhance user experience and drive customer loyalty. The app offers:
1.Push notifications for promotions, sales, and new product launches.
2.Smart search and filters to help users quickly find the right products from a large catalog.
3.Offline product browsing with saved data, so customers can access product details even in areas with poor connectivity.

Conducted user interviews, designed the prototype, and tested with target users.

04. Insights

Defining the Brand

Research goals

Challenge

Users often felt overwhelmed by the large product catalog and found it difficult to locate items quickly. Additionally, when browsing outdoors, weak signals made searching inconvenient.

Solution

I designed a streamlined UX with:

  • Clear product filters and smart search to reduce confusion.

  • An offline browsing mode so users can still view saved items without internet.

  • A simplified interface with clean visuals, making it easier for users of all ages to navigate.

07. COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

Understanding the competition.

  • A premium Korean heritage brand, using traditional botanicals (esp. ginseng) and combining them with modern science.

  • It positions itself as a luxury K-beauty brand with a cultural, elegant appeal.

  • Strong in Asia, but also expanding globally.

  • It leverages storytelling (heritage, “holistic beauty”) and invests in upscale retail experiences.

  • A heritage luxury / prestige beauty conglomerate.

  • Very wide product breadth (skincare, makeup, fragrance) and global distribution.

  • Heavy investment in R&D, marketing, brand acquisition, brand prestige.

  • Strong in prestige department stores, high-end retailers, and global footprint.

  • Luxury / niche brand known for its minimalist, apothecary-style design, elegant packaging, and consistent brand aesthetic.

  • Focus on sensory experience (scents, textures, store environment).

  • Ingredients tend to be botanical + dermatological balance; transparency is valued.

  • Distribution via flagship stores, selective retail, e-commerce.

  • Known for handmade, fresh, ethical cosmetics (including bath & body, skincare).

  • Strong brand identity around activism, cruelty-free, minimal preservatives, fun / quirky messaging.

  • Retail stores are immersive, experiential.

  • Their product formats (bars, solids, minimal packaging) are differentiators.

  • A disruptive niche / “clinical-leaning / ingredient-first” brand.

  • Very transparent pricing and formulations (“no frills,” “honest ingredients”).

  • Appeals to consumers who are cost-conscious but demand efficacy and transparency.

  • Distribution primarily via e-commerce and selective beauty retailers.

  • Originating as a natural / beeswax/nature-based brand.

  • Positioned in the mid-tier natural space, with wide distribution (mass retailers, drugstores).

  • More accessible in price and reach than ultra-luxury lines.

  • Faces challenges balancing scale + maintaining “natural” brand credibility.

06. Defining The Big Picture

The first step of combining all those features into something that makes sense was a flowchart that shows all the screens that make up the app and how they are connected.

Solo Design Journey

Final Delivery & Reflection

Solo Design Journey

  • Balancing Scope: Without a team, I had to plan carefully — focusing on core features that added real value.

  • Staying Efficient: I worked in focused stages to keep progress clear and avoid unnecessary rework.
